Twenty-Three

Makiya

Every day that passes, I’m still surprised to see Hunter showing up each morning to work at the café, texting me every day, and spending his free time with me and Hannah.

Am I happy? Yes.

But maybe a little terrified too.

Because every day that he shows up means I’m another day closer to dropping the protective barriers around my heart.

Of course, after hearing about his night alone with Hannah (because Hannah has talked about it for the last five days straight), the barriers started coming down a little faster.

I hand a receipt to the customer in line and go to make their coffee and wrap up their pastry. It’s almost closing time and thankfully there aren’t many people left in the shop.

Soft country music plays from the radio in the back, and I bob my head to the beat. We always play the older classic country music, none of that new country music that verges on pop.

That’s just how it is down in the south. It’s the only music I’ve ever listened to. It was also my mom’s favorite. She always had it playing in the café, and I can’t bear to change the station, so I leave it.

These are my favorite times of the day. The customers slowly pour out and the satisfaction of another good day lingers in the air.

When I first started working in the café, I had my doubts about my abilities. I told my mom she was crazy for thinking I could handle everything.

Then, my mom got sick. Everything about the cafe landed on my shoulders, completely overwhelming me.

That’s when I realized my anxiety was a real problem. The doctor told me therapy would be the best option. So, I tried it, but talking about it only made me obsess more.

After six months, the therapist recommended a small dose of medication to help take the edge off. It worked, and it became easier for me to accept the things I couldn’t control. Now, the anxieties of the café have given way to the love I have for it.

Running the cafe had never been my passion, not until I had no choice. In the days my mother was battling cancer, I found that I had a real knack for baking and cooking. I came up with my own recipes to add to the menu and they had been successful.

That’s when my feelings towards the café changed, and I realized that I loved the place as much as my mom did.

Some of those items are still on the menu now. My bestsellers, actually.

Days like today are when I miss my mom the most.

My mom had always been my confidant when it came to boys or love or really anything for that matter. There’s nothing I wouldn’t give to be able to talk to her about everything going on. I know she would have had some crazy opinions about Hunter being back.

But she isn’t here. All I have is my dad, and as much as I love my dad, he’s a crazy redneck.
